“I’m sorry,” Megan whispered. “I’m so sorry. I should never have come here. I’ve caused nothing but grief. I mean, I didn’t stop to think. I was scared. All I could hear was Tammy telling me she wanted to live with Rafe because he loved her, and I didn’t. I wanted to talk it out with him. Since Matthew died, Tammy has turned to her uncle more and more.” Fresh tears streamed down Megan’s face.

“I don’t understand.” At Arthur’s troubled expression, Megan added, “The little girl? Rachel? Rafe’s never said anything at home about having a daughter. And he wouldn’t deny the existence of his child if he knew about it. They are so alike, surely they’re related?”

“It’s complicated, and not my place to speculate,” Arthur said. “But something Vince said to me before I got here, leads me to believe Rafe may have begun to consider the possibility.”

Still shocked from the scene he’d witnessed and his sister's fury, Arthur placed a reassuring hand on the frightened woman’s shoulder.

He’d never seen his sister so angry before. With every passing second, he felt the chasm growing between them. When she’d whipped round and faced him with her barrage of accusations, he wondered whether they’d ever manage to bridge it again.

He tried tuning into the natural connection linking twins and sensed a dead emptiness. And he didn’t know what to do. For this to happen after everything she’d been through. A pain, akin to a knife in his chest, tore through him at the prospect of Trudi never speaking to him again.

He knew his twin. Slow to anger, but when someone hurt her as deeply as she hurt right now, she would hesitate to trust them again. He’d just have to wait and hope.

The strident sound of the phone on Trudi’s desk startled them. Vince returned to the study, swiftly crossed the room, and lifted the receiver.

With two distraught women on his hands, Arthur wondered which needed Judy’s support the most. In the end he decided in favor of the Megan. His sister wouldn’t thank him for what she’d consider his interference.

“Yes?”

In response to Vince’s slight inclination of his head, Arthur moved closer to the desk.

“Yes,” Vince repeated. “I’ll tell her.”

In the following silence, Arthur studied Vince’s features. He couldn’t recall the last time he’d seen such banked fury sparking behind his colleague’s eyes. What on earth happened between the women before he joined them?

“I’ll accompany her myself.” Vince’s clipped tone brooked no argument. “I’ve already told you, I’ll arrange the flight. No. He’ll meet you when you arrive.”

Arthur flinched at the hard stare shot in his direction. Who had Vince arranged for him to meet? At first he assumed Rafe had rung to tell them Megan’s little girl had been found, but he must be wrong.

“If you know what’s good for you, you better be at the airport ready to get on the plane when we arrive.”

Megan’s push on his arm startled Arthur into giving up his place beside Vince.

“If that’s Rafe I want to talk to him,” Megan demanded.
